Thank you for letting me rant.)

It has been way too long since my last update. Two full years, five months and so forth. Yeah, way too long. And a lot has happened.

In January 2009, my sister had her fifth child. I graduated Montserrat in December and moved back home to Maryland. In April of 2010, my estranged father passed away from, well.. from alcoholism (the previous incident a few years ago of partaking in a lengthy drinking binge, cutting himself up, and then passing out on his couch only to be found half alive then rushed to the hospital probably didn't help). The same year, a few days before Christmas, his mother, my Nana, also passed away. In the summer of 2011, things perked up with a desperately needed renovation to the house (the full bath ended up going through a complete overhaul from top to bottom). My cousin was married in Arizona, which I was very happy to attend with my grandmother (I help my mother take care of her while trying to find some scrap of employment). During the wedding, my sister and her husband moved the pack of nephews and nieces I have to Colorado for a "better" life. She gave birth to her sixth baby there. The East Coast felt the mini-quake and we were also hit with Hurricane Irene. She took down a giant oak tree in our front yard which demolished our fence, snapped our street's electric pole in half, ripped the cable and electric lines from our house, and smashed not only our neighbor's porch but two cars. They were handed a handsome check from their and our home insurance companies. We were told by FEMA that the tree was no fault of our own and promised a check that never showed up. Finally, we were able to see my nieces and nephews for Christmas when they came to visit... which caused a wonderfully warm reunion when my sister refused to eat anything my grandma fixed (because whatever she did not eat, the kids were not going to eat).

So, for the past two years, five months and so-on, I took a break from making anything substantial. Managing a sketchbook or two, took up knitting again, writing, and a few other things.. but, now that the dust has settled and the need to create has reached a boiling point, I'm getting my "island" together. We all need a refuge, even if its just down the hall or in the corner of a room, on a bed or the kitchen table. We all need an island to get away and create. With all the construction dust still lingering around, a LOT of excess leftover from the renovation/storage was moved out, thrown out, burned and donated. This is what I've been doing the past month:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-efM5elOZOpw/TzAWTloRHVI/AAAAAAAAAKM/Nu9Mm25pBS8/s320/Island1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706085253652749650" />
This room was filled so much you could barely move around. Now, space!

I still have a crap load of things to rummage through. Much of it is old art and class work I plan on purging (by fire). There also happens to be a hoard of useful supplies my friends could put to good use. All-in-all, I am excited and looking forward to a productive year.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sjWjxvPwJgI/TzAbusqA3LI/AAAAAAAAAK8/e_0jDcbyp8A/s320/Island2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706091216953728178" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WxhD8kKfV-E/TzAbu7OoyPI/AAAAAAAAALM/Kpbu8GprAgg/s320/Island3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5706091220865435890" />

Neglect II

Secondly, Paula Auld and I managed to get the "girls" bathroom in the 301 building painted with tattoo designs. I not only enjoyed this but am rather proud of what we painted on the walls, especially that damned ship. Not bad for my first time painting walls.. well.. in an artsy, illustrative way. Again, sorry for the camera phone and the fact that I wasn't done when this pictures were taken. Until recently! So, now that I'm logged in and have time, why not do a little dance with what I've managed to do over the summer. Enjoy!

First thing, Charma is pretty much done. I left him at home back in my state of origin (Maryland). I had always fancied a warehouse/apartment in the city where taking a walk down town would supply me not only with imagination but easy access to life's essentials; reference, art materials, coffee, smokes, and a break from work. Not only would the building serve as my studio but also my home so, I needed to be able to seperate the two in order to make the tax men happy but also be productive by limiting my procrastinating habits and distractions. I wanted a place where I could divide studio space between my 2D and 3D work, office, library, and 'research' area. Windows would be important to me for light and ventilation, and a 'porch' is a wonderful spot for smoking or taking in the night air. Many other factors were taken in account for what I wanted but I'll keep it short.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnKMUNY1DI/AAAAAAAAAII/p9WH-enN0gw/s320/Studio3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335017546529166386" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnKMKRaIYI/AAAAAAAAAIA/qGq3X0CvHzA/s320/Studio1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335017543861674370" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnKMDrqrnI/AAAAAAAAAH4/hXSK12ft9fw/s320/Studio2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335017542092762738" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 224px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnKL40bXDI/AAAAAAAAAHw/W98vi_C2DiM/s320/AN_IdealStudioI.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335017539176717362" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnKLjR_KiI/AAAAAAAAAHo/SmjNowafE9g/s320/AN_IdealStudioII.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335017533395118626" />

Senior Seminar: Art Direct-tator

For Illustration Senior Seminar we had to act as both an illustrator and art director with one another. The lovely Miss Belisle snagged me and, in turn, I clung to her screaming "Mine!" So, she asked me to create three line drawings of a clockwork animal, with the possibility of it being made three-dimensional later. This little guy would be accompanying a young lady in her own adventures (in a book) and to remind her of her father (since he's away at sea and made her the little companion to keep her company.. and things). With the seafaring terms in mind, and not sure if people would understand the awesomeness of an albatross or want one trying to land on the poor kid's shoulder all the time, why not make a ship rat! I've been on a little rat high this past year anyway. I got shinies from Victoria and a mock check from Elissa. I decided, after a couple downfalls, that stress would work considering my past.. and present.. and possible future. I found a map of my hometown and plotted out where different levels of stress occurred, keeping the higher the stress level the more saturated the color of the dot. (In the chart below, due to technological difficulties, the colored dots appear as black for the time being.) I then decided to enclose, in sealed envelopes, a written description of the events that related to the dots on the map. Finally, I took note of where these events occured and made a bar graph displaying the relationship of the events in regards to the setting I experienced them.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 183px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnNNwJSJOI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/sqUdCs2ynco/s320/AN_Chart.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335020869742896354" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SgnNOMCPmUI/AAAAAAAAAIY/vIKmtbTbAAs/s320/AN_Graph.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335020877229562178" />

Thesis: Sculpture Update #3

Both sides are fully fleshed out and the beginning of his crest begins! I really enjoyed this class and rekindled a once angsty, bitter relationship with an old medium. Plans for more, you betcha'. The idea of using watered down ink for cross-hatching was an unexpected thing that happened during the self-portrait. It wasn't tackled as well as it could have... need to follow the shape of the face next time I try it out. I'll post the final for this class when it is finished and my mutated rat when I can snatch it from the 2nd floor. So, after the 13th? Yes? I'm still not satisfied with either of these. Highlights have become a problem with the smoke monster. I've repainted him three times now and the more I fuss with it, the less the paint wants to work with me. It will work with me in time. In the other piece, the sky is awful and the new moon still needs to be added.. if I want to add it. The background seems empty and I'm not sure if it is because the other mountain needs to be larger or more need to be added. Maybe the moon is necessary.. or moons. Possibly moons. Anyway, another reworking from last year's Sci-Fi & Fantasy class with Joe Quinones. I managed to cut the foreground mountain out (and, yes, that part alone has been repainted five times, two of which were this year) and I like the dimensional quality of it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SglKuLHHUhI/AAAAAAAAAGI/b5VZ5AoXzYE/s320/SIS_DrSmoke2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334877390714130962" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SglKuMksO4I/AAAAAAAAAGQ/ENSdJVA5RvA/s320/SIS_Landscape.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334877391106620290" />

Senior Seminar: Outside Work

For Illustration Senior Seminar, two pieces for individual work: Rose and Huestace. The Rose was something I've always been meaning to paint and I decided to go for a warm palette (a challenging for me considering my cooler ways). This will more than likely be painted again with a softer approach and with violets. The robot sculpture, Huestace, is a total reconstruction. He was first made in my Sci-Fi & Fantasy course last year with Joe Quinones but, even though I was happy with him at the time, Huestace needed that extra "ro" to his "bot". Now, I can't wait to make more of him.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 243px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SglAEPOkdFI/AAAAAAAAAF4/pn5T58-LSsc/s320/Rose.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334865675148358738" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_yVetXTGQcE8/SglAEUW95YI/AAAAAAAAAGA/yrp3ZT-S1YE/s320/SIS_Huestace.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334865676525757826" />

Senior Seminar: Public Announcement

For Illustration Senior Seminar's public announcement assignment, recycling.
